As any writer will experience many times in their life, writers block is one of the most discouraging moments you will have. Oh the bliss of writing, the amazing characters, thrilling plot, and what an ending! Yeah, things aren’t always that way, creating is hard and consistently creating is harder.
Being a student in college proves your elasticity on story making. The ability to just keep moving is a necessary trait as a student. I’m in my senior year now and I feel like I’ve run out of steam before reaching the station. I write this to everyone that is falling short of their deadline. When I write, time is everything. I love to sit on stories for months to years. When I step up to write even the beat sheet I’ve watched the same scenes in my head three hundred times. What do I do when I only have mere weeks to create a whole story?
Now this isn’t necessarily an article on how to get better. There really is no cure, and that’s fine. I think there shouldn’t be a rush, or deadlines, a good story comes with time. Instead let's take this as a breather, when we sprint across a story it begins getting muddled. The reason rewrites go so well is because we’ve already thought out the story, but when you rush the first draft you need to go back and fix everything that doesn’t make sense.
What is the rush for anyway? Movies like Onward took six years to get to the screen. It’s one of Pixar’s best films, when it comes down to it, why am I trying to make a fully fleshed out feature in the span of three months? This isn’t a realistic standard for writing at all. As a writer I’m excited to graduate, not just to be in the field but to finally have time to just be a writer.
I leave this article, short and sweat with a message. Write to your hearts desire but do not think time will run out, a good story never dies.
