In a shocking and disappointing announcement last Saturday, Netflix revealed The Witcher is renewed for season 4, but Henry Cavill will not be returning to the role of Geralt. Liam Hemsworth will be stepping in to replace Cavill in the titular role.
Recasting actors between seasons isn’t an uncommon occurance, but typically the change is among side or supporting characters, a less jarring move than recasting the main protagonist.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill announced on his Instagram. “I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Cavill did not divulge the reasons for his departure, but we can speculate on why he is leaving a character he had so much love and respect for.
The first and simplest answer is it comes down to work and scheduling, potentially shooting another 4-5 seasons is a lot for an actor to commit to and having to pass on many other film and tv projects. Additionally, Cavill recently announced he’s returning as Superman. With Superhero film contracts and scheduling, the choice could have come down to Superman or Geralt, and Cavill choose the man of steel over wielding the steel sword.

The more damning evidence for Cavill’s exit is his commitment to align with the lore of The Witcher novels, not coinciding with the direction the showrunners wanted to take. Why would an actor that lobbied for the role in the first place and said in 2021 he was willing to commit to “at least” seven seasons pick up and leave? It’s clear creative differences, and continued clashes between him and the showrunners must have played a big part.
“The toughest part for me was finding that balance between the showrunners’ vision and my love for the books and trying to bring that Geralt to the showrunners’ vision. It’s about treading a fine line there,” Cavill told The Star.” “It’s the showrunners’ story and so it’s an adaptation. The tricky bit for me was finding Geralt from the books’ place within that and being able to serve both as much as I could.”
Cavill leaving The Witcher may have been brewing for some time, Cavill reportedly considered leaving after season 2 citing he and the pro “not seeing eye-to-eye,” on his character, the dialogue and the directions of the story.
“The things that I pushed for, it was not necessarily just more dialogue. It was bringing a more book-accurate Geralt to the screen… All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.”
With alleged reports of some of The Witcher “actively disliking” the books, it’s no question why Cavill, a huge fan of original source material, started seeking a way out.
“I’ve been on a show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) “It’s a recipe for disaster and bad moral,” Beau DeMayo, who formerly worked on The Witcher said. “You have to respect the work before you're allowed to add to its legacy."
Book-to-movie adaptations are always heavily scrutinized for changes and inaccuracies, and video game adaptations have a long history of often being mediocre to terrible. The Witcher is lucky enough to be both and has to appeal to long-time fans of both media as well as be attractive and approachable to new viewers. That’s not an easy position for the showrunners and writers to be sandwiched between, but they managed to cast Henry Cavill, someone with a love for the source material and a deep understanding of who the character is.

Netflix struck gold with Henry Cavill loving the story of The Witcher as well as the character of Geralt. Better yet, Cavill’s Geralt isn’t a carbon copy of the video games he was able to put his own original spin.
As a fan of the books, video games and the first 2 seasons myself, this casting change is worrisome. Henry Cavill brought so much life to the character with his performance and with very few words spoken. I think it’s no surprise why Cavill’s Geralt was so well-received and loved by Witcher fans, on paper the character can come off as a very one-dimensional moody tough guy, but any time spent in the Witcher novels or games will reveal all the layers to Geralt.
Cavill portrayed Geralt of Rivia like he was born to play it, it’s hard to believe that lightning will strike twice and Hemsworth will reach those same heights.
“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” Hemsworth said in a statement. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Hemsworth became well known to most for his role as Gale In The Hunger Games. 10 years later and unfortunately Hunger Games is still his most memorable role. In terms of high-profile leading roles and star power Liam Hemsworth has always been eclipsed by his older brother Chris. Perhaps, The Witcher will be the chance to see Hemsworth finally break through and show what he truly has to offer, but Witcher fans aren’t wrong to be skeptical.
What makes the news of Cavill so heartbreaking for fans of the series isn’t just the love for Henry’s Geralt, but the strong disbelief that Hemsworth won’t be a worthy replacement. I want to give Hemsworth a fair shot and not lose all hope before we’ll even see a glimpse of him in costume, but it is just so difficult to believe that The Witcher season 4 will even be fractionally as good without Henry Cavill at the helm.

Season 3 releases next summer and season 4 is several years away. A lot can happen in that time. The critical and commercial reception of season 3 could push Netflix into cutting deals to bring Cavill to return, or they cancel the show altogether. Time will tell.
For now, the future of the series rests entirely on Hemsworth’s shoulders, with mighty big boots to fill it’s all down to his performance to see if he can capture that same magic or if the show is doomed to fail.
